ACCURATE MEANS OF MEASURING DIAMETERS OF CROSS HOLES IN DIESEL PUMP BODIES
HPC Precision Engineering: Customers from all sectors of industry with ultra high precision machining requirements look to HPC Precision Engineering to turn a design concept into a cost effective, full production reality. Accredited to the global standards of ISO 9001:2008, TS16949, OHSAS 18001, ISO 14001:2004 and the aerospace industry standard of AS9100; HPC has also achieved the distinction of being accredited to individual customers including KAESER Kompressoren GmbH, Aston Martin, Delphi, Caterpillar, General Motors and Varian Medical. In addition, HPC is the only UK based Grade ‘A’ machinist working on behalf of Bentley Motors Ltd.
From small batch pre-production, through to the complete supply chain management of product delivered to any location in the world, HPC constantly satisfies its customers’ needs by guaranteeing quality, delivery and cost effectiveness, through highly skilled engineers working within a total quality environment.
HPC’s use of the latest manufacturing technology extends beyond its renowned machining expertise. When tasked with finding an accurate means of measuring the diameters of cross holes situated in diesel pump bodies, Paul Dennett, HPC’s Quality Engineer, turned to Bowers Metrology for expert advice and assistance.
Paul explains, “HPC’s commitment to quality means that components undergo stringent dimensional checks at every stage of the manufacturing process. The inspection of components intersecting cross holes presented several challenges, as the post machining deburring process had the potential to interfere with the dimensional integrity of these critical features. Bowers suggested the use of its SmartPlug gauges and, following a successful demonstration, HPC trialled and then invested in several SmartPlugs.”
Now in regular use, the advanced Bowers instruments enable HPC to maintain micron dimensional accuracy. A further benefit of SmartPlug gauges is their ability to identify and measure individual bore’s characteristics such as bell-mouthing, ovality and barrelling.
Available to measure diameters from 6mm –280mm, Bowers extremely robust and easy to use measuring plug gauges are designed to provide the operator great speed of use, unmatched measuring accuracy and superb repeatability (even when used in extremely harsh industrial environments).
Advanced hand held ergonomics allied to an ingenious mechanical/electronic system render SmartPlugs the easiest to operate Bowers bore gauging system to date. By simply inserting the hard wearing plug end of the gauge into the bore to be measured, the required diameter can be instantly read on the gauge’s built-in indicator. The flexible nature of Bowers SmartPlugs means that they can be supplied fitted with easy to read electronic indicators, (ideal for automatic data collection) conventional analogue indicators, or transducer probes linked to remote digital readout units.
