PERFORM ACCURATE HARDNESS TESTING IN ROCKWELL, BRINELL, VICKERS SCALES
Boasting a role of more than 60,000 students and a turnover exceeding £70m a year, Leeds City College is one of the largest and most influential colleges in the country. By offering a comprehensive range of high-quality courses and first-rate facilities, the college strives to meet the needs of all potential students. Through continuous engagement with employers, Leeds City College also endeavours to match its wide range of courses to the needs of industry and commerce.
One of three College sites, the Technology Campus offers a range of qualifications including City & Guilds, EAL and Edexcel BTec courses, with a broad curriculum in many engineering disciplines, such as Mechanical, Electrical, Motor Vehicle, CAD & Fabrication. The current Leeds Engineering faculty is able to trace its lineage through Leeds College of Technology, Kitson College of Engineering, back to the famous Leeds Institute. The department offers a range of bespoke modular courses in Engineering and Manufacturing, which are designed for individuals already working within an engineering environment or students who are looking to take up employment in an engineering field. All courses are intended to provide the knowledge of a range of systems that are available to the modern engineer, with specialist programmes tailored to individual companies’ needs.
Leeds City College, Engineering Department pursue a progressive programme of replacing their older machinery with the kind of modern equipment that is currently used throughout industry. Typical of the Department’s rolling replacement philosophy is the recent purchase of an advanced CV-700 Hardness Tester from Bowers Metrology. Ronnie Magee, Leeds City College Business Manager explains. “In addition to explaining the general theories of material science, and of hardness testing in particular, we ensure that our Engineering students gain ‘hands-on’ practical hardness testing experience. As we perform tests on a wide range of metals we need a Hardness Tester that can perform accurate hardness testing routines in Rockwell, Brinell and Vickers scales. It is also important that our tester has a clear digital display and camera system with a monitor that can be viewed by relatively large group of students.”
“After deliberating on the merits of several modern machines, we purchased the CV-700 Hardness Tester from Bowers Metrology. Now in regular use, our new tester’s easy to operate controls allows our students to undertake a range of testing routines and to fully understand their achieved results. Rather than taking turns to look down the eyepiece of the hardness tester, as was previously the case with our old machine, we specified the retrofitting of a Motic 1000 digital microscope camera to the eyepiece of the CV-700. This facility allows both tutors and students to observe the hardness indentation on a computer monitor.”
Ideal for use within harsh industrial environments, the Bowers advanced digital tester boasts a rugged design and is able to accommodate large specimens. In addition to its use throughout industry, Bowers easy to use CV-700 Hardness Tester has grown in popularity within UK academia and training establishments.
