In order to maintain the company’s leading market position, Muffett Gears’ 28,000sqft design and manufacturing facility is equipped with a range of state-of-the-art CNC machine tools that are capable of meeting the most demanding of specifications. The company’s range of flexible equipment enables it to undertake a wide range of applications for an increasingly diverse variety of industrial sectors, including the Aerospace, Defence, Marine, Automotive, Motorsports, Hydraulics and Scientific industries.
As gears are utilised within a multitude of mechanical and electro-mechanical systems, Muffett Gears’ design, development and manufacturing expertise has been called upon by numerous industries. Some of the many recent projects the company has been involved in with the medical sector include parts for radiotherapy machines, adjustable treatment couches, collimator cancer-treatment machinery, medical scanners and artificial hands.
Reflecting the scope of the company’s client base, Muffett Gears’ involvement within the world of Film and TV includes the design and manufacture of gears for motorised camera mounts and underwater cameras, in addition to parts for security and surveillance cameras and systems.
Although the recent closure of Muffett Gears’ main Induction Hardness subcontractor could have had a negative effect on the business, the opportunity was taken to bring this important function in-house. Neil Rodermark (Company Engineer) takes up the story: “Having decided that the in-house provision of high-quality induction hardness would make our operation more autonomous, reduce lead times and help our customers, we purchased the necessary plant. In accordance with our stringent quality regime, one of our most important recent acquisitions is our advanced new hardness tester from Bowers Metrology. After considering several other testers we decided that Bowers latest offering matched our needs, at the right price. Our operators have found the new CV-400DAT Vickers tester, ideal for the accurate testing of a wide range of components, are impressed by the unit’s speed of operation, accuracy and repeatability. Aiding important material traceability, an RS 232 output enables the transmission of our gathered data to external devices, whilst the tester’s integrated high-speed, thermal printer is able to generate hard copy of all measured results.”
Bowers’ new keenly priced, CV-400DAT, motorised turret tester boasts many advanced features, such as a high quality optical system, a convenient digital measuring microscope and dual optical paths to accommodate an optional video measuring system. The flexible new tester can be operator configured to accommodate most Micro Vickers testing situations; Bowers claims that the sturdy unit’s simple control system, allied to a high-resolution digital display ensures rapid and repeatable operation.
